The Library of the Unwritten by A.J. Hackwith is an adult fantasy novel about the library of all the unwritten novels of authors past, present and future.
Books that aren’t finished by their authors must reside in the Library of the Unwritten, which just happens to be located in Hell. Claire is the Head Librarian of the Unwritten Wing. Her job is to care for the books, fix them, organize them and keeping an eye on any restless story thinking about escaping.
When a Hero escapes from his book in search of his author, Claire must track him down with the help of her former Muse assistant, Brevity, and a skittish young demon name Leto. But what should have been a standard retrieval goes terribly wrong, Claire and her motley crew will have to work together to fight for the Library itself.
Will Claire and her group of rag-tag delinquents have the strength to fight both Hell and Heaven and save the Library before it is too late?
I liked this book. It was fun and reminded me a lot of The Invisible Library. There are worlds at risk, the library at the center of politics and conflict, a strong yet flawed female character with a group of cohorts brought together by a cause… shall I go on? And yet it was different enough to keep me entertained.
I liked Claire a lot. She’s brusque and strong, just a tad bit selfish, mostly well meaning and imperfect. There’s a lot there to work with, which is great at the start of a series. I also like Brevity and the dynamic between their relationship. Hero grew on me and so did Leto.
There were things I did see coming in this book but there were also some surprises. I do like this idea of multiple afterlives that are created and die based on people’s beliefs. This was a neat idea and I wanted to see more of these worlds.
I think it will be really interesting to see where this one goes. This one gets 4 high stars from me.
That’s all for now!
