Sorcery of Thorns

Sorcery of Thorns is a standalone fantasy novel by Margaret Rogerson.

Elizabeth has been trained to believe that all sorcery is evil. Raised from an infant within the walls of one of the Great Libraries, this is all she has ever known. But magic is a necessary evil and it is Elizabeth’s greatest hope to become a Warden, one of those chosen to protect the library’s knowledge and the magical grimoires within it’s keeping.

When an act of sabotage finds Elizabeth thrown out of the library and at the mercy of the very sorcerer’s she’d been told to hate, she doesn’t know where to turn. Her only hope of clearing her name and saving the kingdom lies within the hands of a younger sorcerer named Nathaniel Thorn.

Can Elizabeth learn to trust Nathaniel in time to save, not only the Great Libraries, but the kingdom itself?

I enjoyed this book. It wasn’t fantastic, mostly due to the insta-love, but it was an entertaining and quick read. I loved this world of grimoires that range in power and can do random things like sing opera, shake on the shelves and even bite off fingers! Such a fun idea that it is the responsibility of powerless librarians to protect these books, just in case sorcerers need to use them to save the day. Such a wonderful world to read about, I only wish we could live in it longer.

As I mentioned above, the book does have one flaw and that is the insta-love between Nathaniel and Elizabeth. You basically see this coming from a mile away and they fall together so quickly. I know this is a standalone novel, but I would have loved a little smoldering longing.

Elizabeth’s source of strength was also a really interesting aspect of the story that I wish we got to see more of. And I kept waiting to find out who her parents really were and why they dropped her off at the library as a child. But this is something we are left to make our own guesses on.

Overall, I was entertained. A fun, quick read within a really interesting world. 4 stars from me.

That’s all for now!
