Sensory Storytime: 10/19/19 – Frogs
We’ve started testing sensory storytimes in my library system. These are smaller storytimes for children with sensory issues or who are on the autism spectrum. They are meant to be calmer with less stimulation. This is my first one and it is going to be a challenge for me because… I’m loud. haha. We’ll see how it goes.
Introduction
SING – Welcome, Welcome Everyone
Welcome, welcome everyone. Now you’re here, we’ll have some fun. First we’ll clap our hands just so. Then we’ll bend and touch our toes. Welcome, welcome everyone. Now you’re here, we’ll have some fun!
FLANNEL – Frogs for everyone
I am going to pass out frogs to everyone. This way they have something to hold on to and interact with the stories and rhymes.
BOOK – Hop Jump by Ellen Stoll WalshThis is a book all about being different and finding your own special “thing.”
SING/FLANNEL – Have you ever seen a (color) frog
I have colored frogs to put up for this one.
Have you ever seen a RED frog, A RED frog, a RED frog, Have you every seen a RED frog, Go hop, hop, hop, hop.
(Blue, Yellow, Orange, Green)
ACTIVITY – Jumping Lily Pad/Balance Beam
We have sensory circles that I am going to put down as lily-pads and then I am also going to put out these mini balance beams we have. It’ll be an activity time that I am going to pair with this rhyme.
Can you jump, jump, jump, One, two, three. Can you wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, Just like me! Jump, jump, jump. Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle. Now let’s sit on our lily pads Quiet as can be.
BOOK – Jump by Scott M. Fischer
I am going to attempt to read this one calmer than I normally do.
SONG/FINGER PLAY – Five Little Speckled Frogs
We’re going to use our fingers and I have a flannel for this one.
Five green and speckled frogs sat on a speckled log Eating some most delicious bugs — YUM YUM! One jumped into the pool where it was nice and cool Then there were four green and speckled frogs.
Four green and speckled frogs sat on a speckled log Eating some most delicious bugs — YUM YUM! One jumped into the pool where it was nice and cool Then there were three green and speckled frogs.
Three green and speckled frogs sat on a speckled log Eating some most delicious bugs — YUM YUM! One jumped into the pool where it was nice and cool Then there were two green and speckled frogs.
Two green and speckled frogs sat on a speckled log Eating some most delicious bugs — YUM YUM! One jumped into the pool where it was nice and cool Then there was one green and speckled frogs.
One green and speckled frogs sat on a speckled log Eating some most delicious bugs — YUM YUM! One jumped into the pool where it was nice and cool Then there were no green and speckled frogs.
The More We Get Together
A nice slow one to end with.
The more we get together Together, together The more we get together The happier we’ll be ‘Cause your friends are my friends And my friends are your friends The more we get together The happier we’ll be
Social Hour
A chance for some socialization after storytime.
How’d it go:
When the families walked in, I started out my storytime saying, “anything goes.” The kids can get up, run around, play with my fidget toys and I was just going to continue on. I think this really made them comfortable with the storytime. I had some kids sitting quietly, with fidgets in hand, and some kids who ran around grabbing everything. It was chaotic but several of parents were really appreciative of this. They said that didn’t feel like they had to hold their child down to listen. What they wanted to participate in, they did.
For my part, it is a lot of work for a small storytime but it was a really good experience to have. We’ll see how next month goes!
That’s all for now!
