Lightfall by M.A. Phipps and Rebecca Jaycox is the first book in a new young adult fantasy trilogy. The authors currently have the book available to be read through Swoonreads and you should definitely check it out!
Luna grew up alone, moving from one foster home to another until finally ending up in a mental institution after a series of “incidents.” When a mysterious doctor takes her to Egypt to attend a school for children with special abilities, her whole life changes.
Caleb is a Dark Nephilim whose been chosen to attend the Light University in the hopes of striking a peace between the two factions. But Caleb has ulterior motives of his own for playing nice.
When Luna and Caleb meet, their connection is instantaneous but with prejudices going back eons and secrets yet to be unveiled, will they be able to overcome the obstacles in their path?
This is one of those books you can devour in one sitting if you aren’t careful. It is such a quick read that pulls you right in.
One of the things I like most about this book is that the characters are true to their… character. They don’t up and do 180s and suddenly become braver or stronger or what-have-you. You can see the growth in the relationships and character development and in some cases the growth to come.
I also really enjoyed this developing world building of Nephilim and Angels. Like in most great first books in a series, this first book is focused on developing those core characters and hinting toward a bigger picture that the main characters will be pulled in to.
Overall, this was a fun read. There’s some heat, some surprises and obviously more to come. This one gets 5 stars from me. I hope the next one is on its way!
That’s all for now! -M-
