Heartless

Hi Guys,

Holidays mean lots of driving, which means lots of audio book time. So get ready for a few new audio book reviews this month.

Heartless by Marissa Meyer is a re-imagining of how the world of wonderland came to be, specifically the Queen of Hearts.

Catherine wants more than anything to open the most marvelous bakery Hearts has ever seen. She dreams of tarts, cakes and crafting the most delicious pastries. But her parents have different plans for her future.

At a royal ball Catherine finds out that the King of Hearts intends on proposing to her. Attempting to escape her fate Cath flees from the ballroom and runs into the new court joker, Jest. Cath is drawn to Jest and soon the two enter into a secret courtship. But everything is against Catherine and Jest, her parents and friends, secret missions, prophecy and even monsters.

Why is a raven like a writing desk? How did the Hatter go mad? And how did the Queen of Hearts lose her own?

Okay, so we all know how this one has to go. Catherine will become the Queen of Hearts. Some how, some way, it is going to happen. We know this. We go into the book expecting it. But I have to admit, I was routing for Cath… in the beginning. For a while there, I thought she would actually get her happily ever after. But oooh the viciousness at the end of the book was just delicious. Cath’s transformation into the Queen of Hearts was cold and dark and I loved it. Looking back, you can even see some of the darker parts of Catherine shining through here and there. Just so well done.

I loved the characters, especially Jest. He was witty and arrogant, romantic and brave and I just loved his abilities as a Rook. The Hatter, Jest, Raven and even the King were really well developed, while staying true to the heart of the characters as written by Lewis Carroll. The story was familiar and yet it felt brand new.

Overall, this book hooked me right from the start. It fed my imagination and tugged at my heart. An entertaining read with a satisfying ending. I closed this book with a wicked little smile on my lips and a sigh deep down inside.

This one gets 4.5 stars from me.

That’s all for now!
