Family Storytime – 12/28/19 – Snow

Family Storytime – 12/28/19 – Snow

  1. Song – Top of the Morning

  2. This is a fun tune and great for waking up and doing a little stretching. It’s called Top of the Morning.

  3. Hello Rhyme – H.E.L.L.O.

  4. We clap out each letter of “hello.”

Let’s clap and say hello… H.E. L. L. O. H.E. L. L. O. H.E. L. L. O. Let’s clap and say good morning.

  1. Stretch – Skinnamarink

  1. This is a great one to warm up to and everyone knows these movements.

  2. ASL – SNOW / COLD / SNOWMAN

  3. I always teach three or four signs based on our theme in my family storytimes. Check out Signing Savvy or Baby Sign Language to learn these signs.

  4. Book – Snowmen at Night by Caralyn Buehner

  5. This can be a little long but you can really get in to it and it rhymes.

  6. Rhyme – Winter Hokey Pokey

  7. This is basically the hokey pokey but with gloves and boots.

You put your right mitten in, You take your right mitten out, You put your right mitten in and you shake it all about. You do the snowy pokey and you bounce, bounce, bounce, Baby, that’s what it’s all about!

Left mitten, Right boot, Left boot, snow suit

  1. Activity – Sleeping, Sleeping…

  2. This is a game my mom taught me. You put the kids to sleep, “sleeping, sleeping all the children were sleeping,” and you wake them up as different animals, “And when they woke up they were….” Just don’t forget to put your animals back to bed and wake them up as children.

  3. I figured we’d play our usual game but with hibernating animals.

  4. Flannel – Five Little Snowmen

  5. I have a magnet board with five snowmen for this one, as well as the movements that go with the song.

Five little snowmen standing in a row (hold up 5 fingers) Each with a hat (pat head) and a big red bow (pull at neck like a bow tie) Along came the sun (arms form big circle over head) And it shone all day (lean to the left) And one of those snowmen melted away! (put down one finger) Continue until there are no snowmen left.

  1. Rhyme – Once there was a snowman

  2. This was a fun one I found online.

Once was there was a snowman, a snowman, a snowman Once there was a snowman He was tall, tall, tall In the sun he melted, he melted, he melted In the sun he melted Now he’s small, small, small https://www.literacious.com/2016/02/03/toddler-storytime-theme-snow/

  1. Book – Under my hood I have a hat by Karla Kushkin

  2. I tend to pretend to put hats on and off for this one.

  3. Rhyme – Snowflake, Snowflake

Snowflake, snowflake in the sky, Love to watch you floating by. Down you fall upon the ground. Down you fall without a sound. Snowflake, snowflake in the sky, Love to watch you floating by. https://jbrary.com/winter-storytime/

  1. Song/Shakers – Do You Want to Build a Snowman by Frozen

  2. How could I not pass out shakers and dance to this one?

  3. Rhyme – If You’re Happy and You Know It

  4. I’ll include this one if we have time but with my speaker, I want to wrap up a little quicker than normal.

  5. Rhyme – Our Hands Say Thank You

Our hands say thank you with A clap, clap, clap; Our feet say thank you with a Tap, tap, tap. Clap, clap, clap! Tap, tap, tap! We roll our hands around, and say, “Good-bye.” (https://anneslibrarylife.wordpress.com/2012/12/27/baby-storytime-scarves/)

  1. Song – Clean It Up! by The Laurie Berkner Band

  2. Everyone helps put our shakers away.

  3. Song – Goodbye, So Long, Farewell my Friends by Music Together

  4. I always put this one on as I go to open the door. Its a nice, slow, peaceful song to wind down on.

How’d it go:

Not a bad storytime. I added a “Shake Your Sillies Out” about halfway through storytime for a bit of a dance break annnnnd “Do you wanna build a snowman” may not have been the best shaker song, but I had fun singing it.

That’s all for now!
